Childrens - Science Fiction, Adventure Publication: April 28th 2015 by Balzer + Bray
Gillian Seagret doesn’t listen to people who say her father’s a crackpot. His conspiracy theories about the lost technology of Cold War-era rocket scientist Dr. Aloysius Underberg may have cost him his job and forced the family to move to a cottage in the sticks, but Gillian knows he’s right, and plans to prove it.

When she discovers a missing page from Dr. Unerberg’s diary in her father’s mess of an office, she thinks she’s found a big piece of the puzzle–a space-themed riddle promising to lead to Dr. Underberg’s greatest invention. Enlisting the help of her skeptical younger brother, Eric, her best friend, Savannah, and Howard, their NASA-obsessed schoolmate, Gillian sets off into the ruins of a vast doomsday bunker, deep within the earth.

But they aren’t alone inside its dark and flooded halls. Now Gillian and her friends must race to explore OMEGA CITY and find the answers they need. For while Gillian wants to save her dad’s reputation by bringing Dr. Underberg’s secrets to light, there are others who will stop at nothing to make sure they stay buried…forever.

“With seamless writing, a thrilling plot, lots of engaging science puzzles, and remarkable characterization, Peterfreund's exciting tale keeps the adventure solidly in the foreground. Young readers looking for a page turning quest should get into this planned series on the ground floor." — Booklist *Starred* Review

"Peterfreund's focus on character development is complemented by the equal attention she gives to the vast underground city itself. Gillian’s instincts to protect her friends and clear her historian father’s tarnished name are admirable, but Peterfreund gives every character the opportunity to grow, revealing themselves for who they really are." — Publishers Weekly

“With nonstop action, sly humor, and nothing short of the end of the world at stake, Omega City is the alpha book in a new series that mashes up mystery, scifi, and action/adventure into a thrilling novel you’ll want to devour in one sitting. I did, and I can’t wait to read what comes next!” — Peter Lerangis, New York Times Bestselling author of the Seven Wonders series

“Peterfreund’s boundless imagination takes on a new and exciting adventure!” – Jessica Day George, New York Times Bestselling author of Tuesdays at the Castle”

“Diana Peterfreund takes us to an underground city that’s utterly mind-blowing, yet disturbingly possible. A knockout of a story that will have readers cheering straight through to the final, shocking, twist.” — #1 New York Times bestselling author, Gordon Korman

Diana Peterfreund has published ten novels for adults, teens, and kids, including the four-book Secret Society Girl series (Bantam Dell), the “killer unicorn novels” Rampantand Ascendant (Harper Teen), For Darkness Shows the Stars (a post-apocalyptic retelling of Jane Austen’sPersuasion), and Across a Star-Swept Sea (inspired by the classic series The Scarlet Pimpernel). Dazzling Debuts 2015: Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein (Interview)

    Becoming Jinn

    Young Adult - Fantasy, Mythology
Expected publication: April 21st 2015 by Feiwel & Friends

Forget everything you thought you knew about genies!

Azra has just turned sixteen, and overnight her body lengthens, her olive skin deepens, and her eyes glisten gold thanks to the brand-new silver bangle that locks around her wrist. As she always knew it would, her Jinn ancestry brings not just magical powers but the reality of a life of servitude, as her wish granting is controlled by a remote ruling class of Jinn known as the Afrit.

To the humans she lives among, she’s just the girl working at the snack bar at the beach, navigating the fryer and her first crush. But behind closed doors, she’s learning how to harness her powers and fulfill the obligations of her destiny.

Mentored by her mother and her Zar “sisters”, Azra discovers she may not be quite like the rest of her circle of female Jinn . . . and that her powers could endanger them all. As Azra uncovers the darker world of becoming Jinn, she realizes when genies and wishes are involved, there’s always a trick.

PURCHASE A COPY: AmazonBarnes & Noble

    1. Becoming Jinn is your debut novel. For those who don't know much about it, could you tell us more about your novel?
    • Becoming Jinn is a modern spin on the traditional tale of wish-granting genies. So there are no lamps or bottles, no flying carpets, and no three wishes. The genies in my book are Jinn, which are spirit beings prominent in North African and Middle Eastern cultures. Becoming Jinn mixes the lore of the genies we know with that of the Jinn and is set in our contemporary world, in my home state of Massachusetts. The story follows my main character, Azra, from the day she wakes up on her sixteenth birthday and receives the magical silver bangle that forces her to start granting wishes. And I say force because the tradeoff of being able to use magic is that she’s now also tied to the Afrit, the dictatorship-like council that rules over the Jinn world. There are five other Jinn girls who Azra’s grown up with who feature strongly in the novel. There’s also Henry, a human and Azra’s next-door neighbor; the two share a past and rekindle their friendship at the start of the novel. And there’s a love interest, Nate, who, despite his underwear model exterior, is as unsure of himself and struggling to find his way as everyone else is.

    2. How did you come up with the idea of Becoming Jinn?
    • I had the idea for the main character, Azra, before I had the story in which she would live. When I heard the name as part of a news report—a baby by the name of Azra survived an awful earthquake in Turkey--I began imagining the world in which she would live. As a fan of young adult novels, I knew that was the genre I wanted to write. I will say, however, I did think of a Jinn/genie story almost right away. But before heading down that road, I did do some looking into other paranormal, supernatural, and myth retellings, but nothing else grabbed me like the world of the Jinn. At that time, there weren’t any other YA Jinn books on the shelves so that also spurred me to go forward with the story I wanted to tell. And I’m so glad I did.

    3. Azra, the main character of Becoming Jinn, seems like an interesting character based on the synopsis. What trait of Azra do you love the most?
    • She doesn’t take things at surface value. She demands true answers and isn’t satisfied with the idea that just because things have always been one way means that have to stay that way. She’s strong and strong-willed.

    4. What's the best thing about writing Becoming Jinn?
    • Being able to come up with a character and a story that I have loved spending the past two years with—immersed in!—has been incredible. I never tire of this world!

    5. Recommend your novel [Becoming Jinn] to the readers.
    • If you like your fantasy grounded in the real world, then Becoming Jinn might be for you. It’s for readers who love an escape and a sense of humor, kind of like The Vampire Diaries or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

    6. What's next for Lori Goldstein?
    • I have a very busy spring full of exciting events, festivals, and bookstore visits to support the launch of Becoming Jinn. I’m looking forward to all of it! A full list of my events can be found on my Web site (http://www.lorigoldsteinbooks.com/news-events/). In terms of writing, Becoming Jinn has a sequel, tentatively titled Circle of Jinn, and I’ve just put the finishing touches on it. I’m sad to leave Azra and this Jinn world, but I also have many other stories and characters running around in my head, and once the release of Jinn is a bit behind me, I can finally start paying attention to them and get one of them on the page. I have a favorite now and I’m in thinking mode about it, which is a very fun place to be because anything’s possible.

An Open Letter to My YA Self • Giveaway

    Friday, April 24, 2015

Hello, readers! Today, I will be sharing an open letter to my not-so YA self two years ago (considering that I am still fourteen). Anyways, this idea came from Ginger of GReads! where bloggers and authors will write an open letter to their YA self. When I first heard of this, I quickly decided to join because I know that it will give me the chance to look back in my younger years, back when I started reading. So... that's it for my intro. I'm going to move on to my letter now. *waves*

(Click on the banner above to see Ginger's introduction post about An Open Letter to My YA Self and for the whole schedule. Also there's a giveaway at the end of this post!)

    Dear twelve-year-old Kyla,

First of all, I want you to know how much you are loved. Even though you feel alone most times, always know that there is someone who'll listen to your random rants about life tirelessly. Growing up, I know that you faced a lot of problems but I also know that you won't let those problems bring you down because you are one of the bravest person I've known in my life. Continue being brave! You'll need that in surviving life. :)))

AND OF COURSE, I know that you recently just discovered a whole new universe through reading novels and that's awesome. I am glad that you started reading novels because, as cliche as it sounds, reading books are a lot of fun! I won't make this letter long, here are some books I know that you'll like:

The Break-Up Artist will teach you that "being single is not a death sentence". Don't rush things, especially about love. Always remember that you don't need a boyfriend to be happy in life!
Just like Sophie, you will change into a better person and realize that life is never about being pretty nor rich. Life is about being thankful for every moment of your life.
You'll relate to June (the youngest sister) in this book because you're cute (HAHAHA, okay) and annoying (I mean it in a very good way) at the same time.
You'll relate to Daisy because she's as brave as you and she also dreams big like you!
Don't worry about life too much, just have faith. Just always remember that your family will be right behind your back to support you through everything. Just keep on reading, books are your friends. They'll cheer you up every single time. Focus on what you have because you'll never know when you will lose them. Appreciate every moment of your life. Live your life with happiness!

Remember, don't let your past define your future. Never be afraid to dream big! Be brave. Be bold. And most importantly, be you.

    Lots of love,
    Recently just turned fourteen-year-old Kyla

    VAMPIRE'S BANE is a mature young adult paranormal fantasy/romance/action & adventure/post-apocalyptic story.

Now available for pre-order on Amazon...will be released on Amazon on April 14, 2015.

    A lethal sword.

    A dangerous mission.

A seventeen-year-old girl finding her way in a world that is nothing like she remembered.

When Maylin Kavanagh’s parents surrendered her to The Program, they swore it was for her protection. After being confined in a small underground cell for nearly two years, she is finally released.

    But the world has changed.

Most of the populace has been wiped out by a deadly disease, and the rules of society have regressed. But that’s not the worst of it. When her group is kidnapped by a band of rogue vampires, Maylin realizes the decline of the human population has brought other races to the forefront—races she never knew existed. And now they’re all battling for survival and power.

In his father’s absence, Thane Warwick must lead his people. He has two priorities: find his father and find humans who can supply blood to his tribe. Immediately intrigued by his latest captive, he becomes interested in Maylin for more than just her blood, but he soon discovers that he must make a choice between his father and her.

Despite their attraction, Maylin and Thane each have an agenda, and only one can be the victor.

VAMPIRE'S BANE is the first book in the VAMPIRE'S BANE series. While it does end at a natural turning point in the heroine's journey, it is an ongoing story, and not all questions will be answered. You will need to read this series in order.

    I fired the gun.

Time slowed as the bullet spiraled toward his shoulder.

Another shot rang out, though I had no idea who had fired it.

My bullet pierced my target in the shoulder. It pushed him back, but it didn’t knock him off his feet. He released the girl, and her body crumpled to the ground. The second figure immediately crouched over her.

I fired at the man still on his feet, hitting him in the chest. His head snapped up, and he glared directly at me.

Shock assaulted my system. I sucked in air, my mind desperately searching for some logic to apply to the scene before me. His eyes glowed an eerie red, a luminous warning to stay back. Blood dribbled down his chin. I fired a third time, but his swift movements caused my bullet to miss its mark.

Before I could process what was happening, he was on me, his hands holding my head like a vice. He bit into my neck, and I swung my arms backward, hitting him with the butt of my gun.

    “Enough!” a deep voice commanded.

My captor raised his head, but his hands kept me firmly in their grasp. Someone was crying, but I couldn’t turn my head to find the source.

A man stood in the shadows, and the two strangers who had attacked us stood quietly, reluctant to release their captives.

“I said ‘enough.’” The man strolled calmly toward us. As he reached the soft glow of the fire, I realized that he was tall, his body lean and muscular. He didn’t look nearly as old as I had first guessed. His height and authoritative voice disguised his youthfulness, and I detected just a hint of a European accent, probably British softened by years of being in America.

“Thane, surely you realize we’re hungry and there are so few of them left,” my captor implored in a soft Irish lilt.

“So you’ll solve our problem by killing them?”

    “I won’t, but….”

Even though he still gripped my head, I took advantage of their distraction and snaked my gun across my waist and between my side and left arm. I squeezed the trigger, sinking a bullet into my captor’s stomach.

He grunted and hissed air out between his teeth, but his grip never lessened. How was it possible that gunshots seemed to have little effect on him?

In seconds, the one they had called Thane gripped my wrist, the sudden movement knocking the gun from my hand. He shoved my captor away from me and contained me with one arm wrapped around my body like an impenetrable band of iron.

Thane chuckled softly over my head. “Let’s not underestimate this one.”

    Love Fortunes and Other Disasters

    Young Adult - Contemporary, Romance
Expected publication: May 12th 2015 by Swoon Reads
    Pre-order via AmazonBarnes & Noble

In the tradition of Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic, one girl chooses to change her fortune and her fate by falling in love.

Love is real in the town of Grimbaud, and Fallon Dupree has dreamed of attending high school there for years. After all, generations of Duprees have successfully followed the (100% accurate!) love fortunes from Zita’s famous Love Charms Shop to happily marry their high school sweethearts. It’s a tradition. So she is both stunned and devastated when her fortune states that she will NEVER find love.

Fortunately, Fallon isn’t the only student with a terrible love fortune, and a rebellion is brewing. Fallon is determined to take control of her own fate—even if it means working with a notorious heartbreaker like Sebastian.

Will Fallon and Sebastian be able to overthrow Zita’s tyranny and fall in love?

The author of Love Fortunes and Other Disasters, Kimberly Karalius, gave me the wonderful chance to interview her. Check out my interview with her below:

      1. Love Fortunes & Other Disasters is your upcoming debut novel. For those who don't know much about it, could you tell us more about your novel?

Kimberly: My novel is about Fallon Dupree, a girl who’s been waiting for her chance to attend high school in Grimbaud, a magical town said to have been blessed by Love. Generations of Duprees have followed the 100% accurate love fortunes they received from Zita’s famous love charms shop and married their high school sweethearts. Fallon intends to do the same… until she finds out that her fortune says she’ll never find love.

Fallon decides to take her fate into her own hands when she joins a rebellion of fellow teens with terrible love fortunes. Among them is Sebastian, a notorious heartbreaker – a boy she can’t fathom liking, let alone working with for the sake of the rebellion. Will they be able to work together to break Zita’s hold over the town? Will they fall in love?

      2. How did you come up with the idea of Love Fortunes & Other Disasters?

Kimberly: The first germ of Love Fortunes and Other Disasters came from the silly conversations I had with my fellow English major friends in college. With classic literature texts on our laps, we used to joke about how we’d end up like the spinsters in the stories we read – but glamorous spinsters, with butlers and mansions, of course. I always wanted to turn that idea into a novel, but since I love writing YA, I wanted to write it from a teen’s perspective. Then, the idea of 100% accurate love fortunes came, along with Love and a magical, romantic town, and Love Fortunes developed from there!

      3. Fallon Dupree, the main character of Love Fortunes & Other Disasters, seems like an interesting character based on the synopsis. What trait of Fallon do you love the most?

Kimberly: Fallon’s preoccupation with the idea of quality is probably my favorite trait of hers. She cooks her own food, stays away from anything prepackaged, and pays a little too much attention to details, a skill she learned from her health inspector parents and older brother. As someone who is not as disciplined, I couldn’t help but admire her resolve while writing her.

      4. What's the best thing about writing Love Fortunes & Other Disasters?

Kimberly: Developing the town of Grimbaud was my favorite part of writing Love Fortunes and Other Disasters. Grimbaud is very much Love’s town, so creating the shops, gardens, and even tourist attractions that make this town tick was so much fun. I wanted to create the feel of an old, European town, and Bruges, Belgium became a huge inspiration for Grimbaud.

      5. Recommend your novel [Love Fortunes & Other Disasters] to the readers.

Kimberly: I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys whimsy and magic, as well as readers who have ever felt, or currently feel, that finding love is an unreachable goal.

      6. What's next for Kimberly Karalius?

Kimberly: I’m currently writing my next novel for Swoon Reads. And… that’s probably the most I can say about it at this point.
