I am so happy to be here today, Kyla. Thank you for having me on! Hello, all you wonderful readers of Book Buddies PH! What a great day for an interview!
K: Hello Mr. Rhew! It's an honor to have you here on the blog.
D: Thank you, Kyla! It's an honor to be on your blog.
K: So, 122 Rules is your debut novel (correct me if I’m wrong). For those who don't know about it, could you tell us more about the book.
D: It is, though it isn't my first published book. My first novella, Birth of an American Gigolo, came out this last January. Birth was a story I wrote while writing 122 and the two books have timeline and character overlap. There's a scene in 122 where Monica calls her friend, Angel, to come and rescue her. We get to hear the phone conversation from Monica's side in 122, but you'll be shocked to know what Angel was doing when you hear the conversation from her side in Birth. That was great fun to write!
So the short answer to your question is 122 Rules is about a federal assassin that grows a conscience mid-assignment.
A SoCal girl is going to NYU in New York when she overhears a conversation between a mob boss and his henchman. The FBI nab her, stick her in Witness Protection, and force her to testify. Only not everyone in the government is happy the FBI have a star witness. In fact, some want her to be silenced. Forever. So we have the mob and the government chasing her, and she's fighting for her life.
The book has explosions, car chases, gun fights, evil henchman, a bit of humor, and some twists and turns that should keep you flipping the pages!
K: How long did it take you to write 122 Rules?
D: FIVE years! I wrote the initial book in just a few months and then spent a year editing it. Well, the book I wrote was 160,000 words long, over twice the acceptable limit. I missed the memo on correct debut novel book lengths. So I rewrote it, cutting cutting cutting, editing, and reworking. I have a second book in the series about 2/3 of the way done and the 3rd book in the works. I got picked up by Pandamoon Publishing in October of 2014, and here we are 18 months later, a snot-ton more edits complete and a polished first novel.
K: What inspired you to write 122 Rules?
D: I don't think I had an inspiration for 122; it just sort of popped into my head. Actually what popped into my head was a scene. I was on my way to work at o'dark 30 in the morning, and an image so vivid came to me that I had to pull over and type it out on my phone. Funny, the scene is the opposite of "It was a dark and stormy night." It was actually a beautiful bright morning in a little SoCal beach town called Alabaster Cove.
K: Why should readers read your book?
D: I write what I love to read. My characters are snarky, funny, adventurous, strong, and deeply flawed. I think they are relatable. The underdogs give you someone to root for, and the bad guys are very bad.
K: Lastly, what is your message/piece of advice to those aspiring authors?
D: Erin and I have "Tenacious" tattooed on our wrists because that represents who we are. We had to be tenacious to be together, and tenacity made it possible for our books to be created. I think the dedication page of 122 Rules says it all:
For the Tenacious: Never Give Up
D: Thank you SO much for having me on today Kyla!
K: That was really fun and it was truly an honor to have you here, Mr. Rhew!

Today, we are announcing my adult thriller novel, 122 Rules.
In his black and white world, Sam Bradford--former Marine turned government assassin--finally sees a speck of grey. He has always followed orders without question, but his latest assignment threatens to disrupt the precision of his universe and may either severe or redeem his last remaining sliver of humanity.
Using his mastery of the 122 Rules of Psychology, Sam hunts down everyone The Agency sends him to find and eliminates them. Just as he has his rifle scope focused on his latest victim, Monica Sable, a SoCal girl entangled with the mob, his long-dormant conscience reappears for a final performance...one last ditch effort to save the sinking ship of Sam’s soul. He’s killed innocents before, but tarries on pulling the trigger this time.
When Monica escapes his crosshairs and fumbles her way across the country in a pathetic attempt to elude capture, Sam gives chase. But he’s not the only one after her. Ruthless henchmen, hired by the mob, froth like bloodhounds and nip at Monica’s heels. Now Sam is faced with a choice: turn his back on the rules and jeopardize his way of life by helping her or join the pack and rip her to shreds.

Deek lives in a rainy pocket in the Pacific Northwest with the stunning YA author bride, Erin Rhew, and their writing assistant, a fat tabby named Trinity. They enjoy lingering in the mornings, and often late into the night, caught up Erin’s fantastic fantasy worlds of noble princes and knights and entwined in Deek’s dark underworld of the FBI and drug lords.
He and Erin love to share books by reading aloud to one another. In addition, they enjoy spending time with friends, running, boxing, lifting weights, and exploring the little town--with antique shops and bakeries--they call home.

ABOUT ERIN RHEW:
Erin Rhew is an editor, a running coach, and the author of The Fulfillment Series. Since she picked up Morris the Moose Goes to School at age four, she has been infatuated with the written word. She went on to work as a grammar and writing tutor in college and is still teased by her family and friends for being a member of the "Grammar Police."
A Southern girl by blood and birth, Erin now lives in a rainy pocket of the Pacific Northwest with the amazingly talented (and totally handsome) writer Deek Rhew and their “overly fluffy,” patient-as-a-saint writing assistant, a tabby cat named Trinity. She and Deek enjoy reading aloud to one another, running, lifting, boxing, eating chocolate, and writing side-by-side.
