Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love . . . or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear . . . the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Enthrall by M.R. Reed
Blog Tour

February 1-12th, 2016

After years of being a helpless witness to his alcoholic father’s abuse towards his family, seventeen-year-old Miles Boswell has just about reached his breaking point. He dreams of the day where he can leave everything behind and begin a new life on his own -- that is, until he discovers that he has the ability to control people’s minds. Suddenly, the odds are overwhelmingly in his favor.

But what begins as the answer to all of his problems soon causes him to question his every thought when he captures the attention of August Sylvan, who seems to be the girl of his dreams. As someone who has limited experience with girls, Miles can’t help but wonder -- where do his powers end, and where does reality begin?

At the same time, he finds himself at constant odds with his morals and his potentially warped sense of justice...and soon discovers that nothing is as simple as it seems.

This book contains strong language, violent scenes, and some sexual content.

I got to interview the wonderful author of ENTHRALL, M.R. Reed and it was a great one! Check it out below:

1. Hello Miss Reed. It's an honor to have you on my blog. ENTHRALL is your debut novel, right? (correct me if I'm wrong)
For those who don't know much about it, could you tell us more about the book?

• Hi, and thanks! It's an honor to be featured. Enthrall is my debut, but I'm in the process of writing a sequel with possibly one more to follow. Enthrall is a story about a seventeen year old boy named Miles who's never had much control of his life and has grown up in an abusive household. He begins to notice that people are getting more responsive to his requests, and after a little trial and error it occurs to him that he has started developing mind control powers. Around this same time he meets August, whom he considers to be everything that he's ever wanted in a girl and strangely, is interested in him. He doesn't have a whole lot of experience with girls, so he doesn't know if it's his powers that are making her like him or if it's genuine. His new-found ability, his blossoming romance with August, and his warped sense of justice all combine to create a story that questions the dilemma of ultimate power, and the potential corruption that comes along with it. Just because you can do something, does it mean that you should do it? What if no one would ever know?

2. Do we get to read the book from both Miles' and August's perspectives?

• Yes! Every chapter alternates first-person perspective. Miles has the "odd" chapters, and August is "even".

3. What was the best part in writing ENTHRALL?

• Letting these characters out and telling their story after years of stewing in my head. Miles and August, in one way or another, had begun a life in my head about 8 years before I actually sat down and started writing the novel. I had their personalities figured out, and I had sketches and lines of dialogue and floating scenes scribbled down in notebooks. Being able to fully realize the whole story by putting the pieces together and allowing the scenes to unfold was such a rewarding experience.

4. What inspired you to write ENTHRALL?

• Life, mainly! While the majority of Enthrall is fictional, there are quite a few elements that came from my own life and helped to shape Miles and August. It was very cathartic to finally get some of those events out into the open. I also owe a lot of inspiration to the X-Men, who really got me into powers and how magnificent they are. Reading Matilda by Roald Dahl as a child was what first got me intrigued in powers, but later on I read a bunch of different X-Men series, and those are how I truly fell in love. There's also a movie that inspired me, but I don't want to say what it is because I feel like it ruins the ending :)

5. Why should people read your book?

• People should read Enthrall because it's not your average teen romance book. Three of the things that I'm most proud of with this book are first of all, Miles and August behave like a real couple. Yes, they have their lovey-dovey, passionate moments that we all crave from a relationship. But they also fight, and have disagreements, and don't always see eye-to-eye on issues. There is a mutual respect, and when that respect is violated, there need to be real consequences. I worked really hard to establish that in this book. Secondly, Miles and August are straight-edge, which means that they actively do not partake in alcohol or drugs or engage in promiscuous sex. This is a lifestyle that is vastly underrepresented in our society, and I think it's important to know that there ARE people who don't think it's cool to be drunk or high. Finally, I encourage the reader to think. You're reading! You're a smart person just for doing that! Don't let the author explain everything to you, or tell you what to think. If you think a character is being a jerk, he probably is! That's why I also love using first-person point of view -- it messes with your mind :) You should read my book if you like punk rock, and powers, and a little sex and violence!

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Our formative years are the ones that stick with us the most--you know, those tirelessly frustrating yet unforgettably magical moments that shape us into the people that we will become. The music that I liked as a teenager, the books that I read, the relationships that I created (and destroyed)...those are the things that I think truly formed the adult that I am today. I still love those things. I still think about those things. I still harbor a lot of anger in relation to the events that I experienced as a teenager, and it does nothing but fuel my creative spirit.

And that's what I like to write about: Teenagers, and all of their idiosyncrasies, and concerns, and that whole unintentionally egocentric view that they have about their worlds. I find it fascinating. I'm thankful every day that I'm no longer a teenager, but I have to admit that it's a interesting time to look back on.

Miles and August encompass a lot of me, and my experiences, and my observations. The music, books, and beliefs that I held at that time inspired me to write about the events that take place in Enthrall. My intense hope is that somebody reads it and is able to relate, or get through a difficult time, and just know that somebody understands what he/she is going through (at least a little bit.) That's what music and books did for me. I hope to pay it forward.
